In December 2024, the Australian Department of Home Affairs introduced key changes to student visa requirements. Please see summary of changes below along with key resources.

1. Double-check before you submit

Applicants now have only one chance to submit complete and correct information with their visa application; missing documents may
result in rejection.

2. Early submission leads to faster visa approval

To avoid delays, students should submit their applications at least eight weeks in advance. Find more detailed information in the link below.

3. Changes to the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass - 485)

The Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) has also been refined, with new eligibility criteria, including the exclusion of Graduate Certificates from the "degree" definition.

4. Understand requirements for minor student visa holders

Additionally, minor student visa holders must secure approval for welfare arrangement changes if a guardian departs Australia. For more details, consult the Department’s website below. 

$3.5 million in Commonwealth grants for Macquarie University medical research

Five Macquarie University researchers have received a total of $3,475,226 in the latest round of National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) Grants.

The projects include a potential treatment for Alzheimer’s disease, an investigation of whether metal-containing compounds could
combat deadly fungal infections, a driver of cardiovascular disease, and the neurons that control swallowing.

Macquarie University welcomes hundreds of education researchers to campus

Macquarie University recently hosted the 2024 Australian Association for Research in Education (AARE) Conference on its Wallumattagal Campus, bringing together education researchers to explore the current challenges and opportunities in the sector.

Over 900 delegates discussed topics centred on this year’s them: Education research in a changing world. 

Engineering building milestone marked with topping out ceremony 

Macquarie University celebrated a significant construction milestone end of last year, with a traditional topping out ceremony at its new Engineering and Australian Astronomical Optics building. The event featured a smoking ceremony by Dharug elder Uncle Christopher Tobin and included speeches from University leadership and the project team.

After more than 12 months of construction, the ceremony celebrated the end of the building’s major structural phase, with the final concrete works
(including the final major pour for Level 5) now complete. The next phase involves the fit-out and façade works. Façade panels will be delivered during the next month. The building is on track for a mid-2025 completion.
